After much research, I have decided I want to buy, build, or restore a 16' great pelican. It looks like for the great pelican there are only plans, but no kit. Is this the case? I think at this point I am interested more in buying a used one. Can someone tell me the best way to go about finding one. Are there many for sale? I would love to attend an event or gathering where I could talk to owners of pelicans. Is there anything coming up soon. I am a kayaker who has built and paddled his own kayak. After sailing recently with friends I am realizing that I enjoy that much more. The pelican seems like it would be a great stable boat to take out on the SF bay. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Chris,
We'll be introducing kits for the Great Pelican this month(Dec. 08'). Used GPs are few and far between unfortunately.
For events in your area check out S.F. Pelican fleet 1.
You'll find them in a Google search. Also, The S.F. Maritime Museum has a program building and sailing Pelicans.

I was lucky to have found a used GP last year in southern Alabama at a wooden boat show. It was in Ok shape at the time, but needed real attention. My wife and I spent about 4 months restoring her to working and half way decent looking condition. But, I consistently find myself trying to figure out why the original builder did things a certain way or not. Or why he deviated from the plans in a certain way. Long story short, I would have relished the idea of building a Great Pelican from a kit. I enjoyed the process of restoring (which will never end, it needs new spars badly)but, you never know what you are getting into when you buy a used home built boat. Good Luck. Nate
